Story Behind the Origin Of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Markandeya Rishi is one who composed Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Markandeya was the son of ascetic and fiery Mrkand Rishi. After Markandeya was born his father was told by the astrologers that his age will be 16 years only. When Markandeya was 5-7 years old, his father told him that he will be alive till the age of 16, and at the same time, his father gave him a mantra to worship Lord Shiva and told him that only Shiva can free him from the fear of death. After that Markandeya started worshiping Shiva by chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra while sitting in the Shiva temple. On the day of Markandeya’s death, the messengers of Yamraj came to pick him up but due to the effect of the mantra, the messenger could not muster the courage to approach the child. The messenger went back and informed Yamraj and then Yamraj himself came to take Markandeya. After seeing Yamraj and his bloodshot eyes, Markandeya got scared and embraced the Shivling while crying and chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.

Then Lord Shiva himself appeared angrily and said to Yamraj “how did you even think of punishing the devotee sitting in my shelter”

Yamraj got scared seeing Lord Shiva angry and said “ Lord, I am sorry. After that Yamraj went from there. And this is how reciting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra saved the life of a boy Markandeya.

In this way, there is a story of the origin of the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, which is associated with the grace of Lord Mahakal.
